A Conspiracy of Titanic Proportions
August 9th, 2007 by hayesy
This site has a very amusing ‘conspiracy theory’ about the Titanic – which pretty much sums up my opinion of conspiracy theories in general. (Make sure you watch the video!)
Am I too closed minded? I suppose that along the line at least some have been right. Can anyone think of any?
ps Have you seen howard007.com? (see previous post for more)

And just to prove you could make a conspiracy out of anything – here is an actual Titanic conspiracy that I found searching for the one in the post! (Because governments really do get a kick out of deliberately sinking billion dollar ships. No, really, trust me.)

Dale! Good to see you! (well… interact with you)
I’m 98.76% sure the first guy has his tongue firmly planted in his cheek. The guy in Comment 1. , on the other hand…..

Awesome advertising decisions #344:
The little google ad to the right of a post about the less impressive aspects of conspiracy theories, says “9/11 ‘Inside Job’”

that is the funniest thing ever if a boat couldn’t be sunk by ice why do the need ice breakers couldn’t they just use jet ski’s or something. i didn’t get the ice melting thing i don’t remember them saying that the Titanic melted. I am so confused by his graphs and am left wondering if it is a joke. my favorite bit is why don’t they make boats out of ice.

It’s great isn’t it!
I think the point of the graphs is to make fun of the unintelligible graphs you see in conspiracy doccos.
And I think the melting part is taking the mickey out of random ‘evidence’ in said doccos.
Good fun though, aye?

I was interested in your reference to the Titanic conspiracy website. I agree it is absurd.
In June 2004, I was one of the historians interviewed for the SKY TV programme from their conspiracy series, although none of my material made it to the final cut. If you wish to read some notes from my interview, you can see them on my website at http://www.markchirnside.co.uk (go to the ‘Interview Index’ of the contents box).
Alternatively, you can download an extensive refutation of the theory at the following:

Best wishes,
Mark.

Thanks Mark! Looks like a good resource for people who want to investigate further.

Glad you found it of interest.
I even managed to convince a pro-conspiracy theorist of the anti-conspiracy case, some time ago. Part of the troublem has been that many researchers have automatically dismissed it as absurd, and it is, yet it’s by a sound historical methodology (examining it claim by claim) that any theory should be judged. When we trace the conspiracy theorist’s footnotes, there’s a pattern of misrepresentation and distortion.
Best wishes,
Mark.

PS — I forgot to mention that my website’s being redesigned soon, it will retain all the original urls and the feel of the old site, with some improvements for a more professional look. However, if it is ever temporarily unavailable for you then that is why.
Best wishes,
Mark.
