“Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne, and I myself have founded great empires; but upon what did these creations of our genius depend? Upon force. Jesus alone founded His empire upon love, and to this very day millions would die for Him. . . . . I think I understand something of human nature; and I tell you, all these were men, and I am a man: none else is like Him; Jesus Christ was more than man. . I have inspired multitudes with such an enthusiastic devotion that they would have died for me, . . but to do this it was necessary that I should be visibly present with the electric influence of my looks, of my words, of my voice. When I saw men and spoke to them, I lighted up the flame of self-devotion in their hearts. . . . Christ alone has succeeded in so raising the mind of man towards the Unseen, that it becomes insensible to the barriers of time and space. Across a chasm of eighteen hundred years, Jesus Christ makes a demand which is beyond all others difficult to satisfy; He asks for that which a philosopher may often seek in vain at the hands of his friends, or a father of his children, or a bride of her spouse, or a man of his brother. He asks for the human heart; He will have it entirely to Himself. He demands it unconditionally; and forthwith His demand is granted. Wonderful! In defiance of time and space, the soul of man, with all its powers and faculties, becomes an annexation to the empire of Christ. All who sincerely believe in Him, experience that remarkable supernatural love towards Him. This phenomenon is unaccountable; it is altogether beyond the scope of man’s creative powers. Time, the great destroyer, is powerless to extinguish this sacred flame; time can neither exhaust its strength nor put a limit to its range. This is it which strikes me most; I have often thought of it. This it is which proves to me quite convincingly the Divinity of Jesus Christ.”

He underestimated man’s (and woman’s) creative powers.

Do you mean Napoleon underestimated:
– his own creative powers?
– a human being’s creative powers?
– Jesus’ creative powers?
Can you elaborate?
Just interested in what your comment was commenting on.
Sorry JPJ.
The relevant part is:
“All who sincerely believe in Him, experience that remarkable supernatural love towards Him. This phenomenon is unaccountable; it is altogether beyond the scope of man’s creative powers.”
I’m saying that it’s not beyond the scope of a human’s creative powers to imagine having a supernatural love of God. Even an evangelical will agree that those of other religions imagine something similar towards other gods all the time.
Thanks mate,
I agree with your conclusion
No he’s saying that no one can make up Jesus he came down and died for our sins even though we did not deserve it. Other religions have “gods” that please them and make them happy. To follow Jesus you have to give up a lot you have to turn away from what your body and heart want and turn to Jesus for guidence and to bring him glory not yourself. And Jesus has saved us and his gospel is still being told and people are giving their lives to him and no person can “create” that, because we’re prideful and want to make us happy and that’s it until u know Christ.
Hang on, what other god is actually there just for happiness? What god does not require some kind of sacrifice? Don’t some Muslims kill themselves for Allah? Didn’t the very earliest gods, totems, worshipped ancestors, etc. require literal sacrifices of anything from goods to lives?
Napoleon sure didn’t look very far for comparisons.
Christianity is unique in the concept of God loving humnas, and humans loving God. In Islam, there is no concept of “God is love.” God is a God of power and morality who demands submission, but they don’t have a concept of God loving them. In early religions in the middle east besides Judaism, “gods” required sacrifices. It didn’t make people happy, it was only to appease the gods in hopes they wouldn’t hurt you or destroy you. In eastern religions, they don’t talk of a personal creator who knows you and loves you intimately.
Napolean was saying that it is unique and unexplainable to believe that a person who lived 1800 years before him would have the ability to affect people across generations and cultures in such a way that the believers would believe they actually love Him even though they have never seen Him. Human minds have a hard enough time loving their friiends and families they see and know, much less someone they have only heard about. Then to die for such a “person” that you have never seen, iis not the natural choice. Even for a believer who understands the doctrine ofGod’s love, when supernatural love comes it seems inexplicable even to him or her.
