Chesterton was the man. He’s not quoted nearly as often as he should be.
I disagree with his basic position, of course, but having taken that position he argued it with wit, force and class. Once he started on his apologetics, he didn’t just concentrate on winning arguments either; as the quote shows, he didn’t let his own side off the hook.
Agreed. I haven’t read any of his books. Yet.
Hmmm. I’m not sure he had Christians in his sites when we wrote this. But rather secularists who think that Christianity has failed. GKC’s point is that they have not tried it. But I’ll need to source the quote to be sure.

You’re probably right – that was how it was used when I heard it. But I think the quote (like the heading of the post) is simultaneously a rebuke of Christians and a rebuttal of secularists.
